Amid rising mortgage rates and home prices, the share of renter households that could afford to buy a median-priced home in the United States has declined notably since 2019. In the second quarter of 2025, approximately **** percent of U.S. renter households were able to afford homeownership, meaning that they earned enough to purchase a median-priced home without monthly payments (including mortgage, insurance, taxes and general maintenance) costing them over ** percent of their gross monthly income. In the fourth quarter of 2019, nearly ** percent of renters were considered homeownership-ready.
