Hungarians considerably increased their spending on clothing items over the past years. As of 2023, household expenditure on clothing peaked at over one trillion forints. 

Retail sales of clothes

 Since 2010, there have been fewer and fewer clothes retail stores operating in Hungary each year, with their number totaling approximately 10,800 in 2023. During the same year, the retail sales of clothes and textiles amounted to 853 billion forints, representing a considerable increase compared to the previous year.

Clothes shopping habits

 People have different preferences when it comes to buying clothes, as some value expensive designer brands, while others may find financial or environmental aspects more important. Considering people’s attitudes towards purchasing second-hand items, in 2020, every fifth Hungarian bought used fashion items to save money, and a further 20 percent did so for a different reason. According to a survey conducted during the same year, the majority of Hungarians were against purchasing counterfeit fashion items.
