According to the source, prior to 1996, an estimate of the value of coke produced in coke ovens owned by the iron and steel industry was included, this has now been replaced by an estimate of the value of coal purchased for such ovens, which is the actual monetary trade.

This statistic shows the expenditure on coal and solid fuels* by industrial end users in the United Kingdom (UK) from 1970 to 2019, in million British pounds. It shows that the expenditure on coal and solid fuels increased significantly over this period, from 285 million British pounds in 1970 to 780 million British pounds in 2019. From 1990 to 2000, the expenditures on coal and solid fuels decreased notably to 430 million British pounds, but increased again in the following years and peaked in 2011, at 1.5 billion British pounds.
