In 2024, Spain had the highest rate of kidney transplant procedures at 85.2 per million population. This was an increase from 2023, when the rate was 77.7 per million. The Netherlands followed with the second-highest rate at 63.6 kidney transplants per million. Third-placed France recorded a rate of nearly 58 procedures per million population.
In comparison to the rest of Europe, Spain had the fourth-highest rate of liver transplants in 2024 with 28.3 liver transplants per million population carried out in the country. Additionally, that same year, Spain had a heart transplant rate of 7.3 per million population, based on this figure, Spain placed within the top five in Europe
In 2024, there were more than 8,400Â patients in Spain waiting for a kidney with a further over 1,800 patients on the liver transplant list. Furthermore, there were nearly 60 patients who died on the transplant list waiting for an organ transplant.
