Finland had the highest rate of pancreas transplants in 2024, at four per million population, a decrease compared to the previous year. Czechia followed with the second-highest rate of 3.8 pancreas transplants per million. Pancreas transplant procedures are used to treat individuals with diabetes by replacing their pancreas with one that can produce insulin from a deceased donor. 

Transplant activity in Finland

In comparison to the rest of Europe, Finland had the fourth-highest rate of kidney transplants in 2024. There were 57.1 kidney transplants per million population carried out in the country that year. Furthermore, Finland had a liver transplant rate of 13.8 per million population, placing it in the middle among the European countries. 

Waiting on the transplant list

In 2024, there were 684 patients waiting for a kidney transplant in Finland, a decrease from the number waiting in 2023. The number of patients requiring other organ transplants has also decreased since the previous year.
