The delegation of the Netherlands to the European parliament is elected once every five years by all Dutch nationals over the age of 18 who are eligible to vote. Of the European parliament’s 751 seats, 26 are allocated to the Netherlands. The European parliament exists of European parties, often formed by national political parties cooperating with national political parties from other European Union countries. The 26 Dutch seats are filled through party-list proportional representation elections, in which voters vote for a specific candidate connected to a national political party. The votes for the specific candidates are added up and determine the number of seats per party as well as the occupants of these seats.
