Citation formats

Since the first European Parliament elections in 1979, 18 groups have been represented in the parliament, as well as over 200 independent MEPs. By far the two most successful parties in the history of the parliament have been the European People's Party (EPP) and the Socialists & Democrats (S&Ds), being the only two party groups to have won a European election.

Currently, the EPP is the largest group, with their member Ursula von der Leyen becoming President of the European Commission due to this. In recent years both the EPP & S&Ds have lost vote share to groups such as Renew Europe (previously the liberal group) and the Greens, as well as to groups on the eurosceptic right such as Patriots for Europe and the European Conservatives & Reformists.

The most recent European Parliament elections took place in June 2024. As a result, EPP remained the largest group in the Parliament, and Germany, Italy, and mostly France saw far-right parties securing an important number of seats.
