Italy was Germany’s main wine import partner, with around *** million hectoliters imported in 2023. Other leading countries of origin for wine imports were European wine production heavyweights Spain and France. 

White wine

Germany has a thriving wine production industry and the country is especially known for its white wines. This is reflected in wine production volume figures, with roughly *** million hectoliters of white wine produced in 2023. Per capita wine consumption has fluctuated slightly among German consumers, amounting to around ** liters that same year. At the same time, Germans definitely consumed more wine than sparkling wine, one of the reasons perhaps simply being the variety of German wines on the market, as well as foreign ones.

Decreasing export value

In 2023, German food retailers sold roughly *** million bottles of wine (of **** liters each). Germany also exports its wines, with an export value of around *** million euros in 2022.
