Prior to 2026, three titles tied for the list of films with the most Academy Award nominations: "Titanic" (1997), "All About Eve" (1950), and "La La Land" (2016). All three films were nominated for ** awards. "Sinners" (2025) broke this tie in 2026, with a total of ** nominations, of which it won four. Titanic recevied 11 of its 14 nominated awards.

"Titanic" is a 1997 romance and disaster film directed, written, and produced by James Cameron. The film, which was inspired by the tragic fate of the real-life ocean liner RMS Titanic in 1912, drew millions of viewers to the cinema over eight decades later. Today, it still firmly ranks among the most profitable movies of all time, with box office revenue surpassing *** billion U.S. dollars worldwide. Only two films currently top this figure, one of them being "Avatar" (2009) – also directed by Cameron. The Canadian director triumphed in the Best Director category for "Titanic", whereas "Avatar" was mostly praised for its visual effects and technological innovation.

The Power of the Dog sets a precedent

The Netflix drama "The Power of the Dog" (2021) received ** nominations at the 94th Academy Awards. While the film starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, and Jesse Plemons only took home one trophy at the end, this win marked a significant milestone for the show. With Jane Campion winning the Oscar for Best Director, she became the first woman to be nominated in the category twice and the second woman in a row to succeed. Most notably, Campion was only the third woman in history to be awarded the coveted prize for Best Director – one of several non-acting related categories at the Oscars dominated by male nominees and winners.
