Total employment (point in time) and Total employment (average during the year) which are from the Business Register and Employment Survey (BRES). Changes in the treatment of working owners in the 2010 and 2011 BRES have led to a discontinuity between the 2010 and 2011 BRES employment estimates and earlier years. Care should be taken when making comparisons between employment in 2010 and 2011 and that in any earlier years.
The Annual Business Survey uses a sample of data from 62,000 businesses in the Non-Financial Economy in Great Britain and 11,000 in Northern Ireland to draw estimate totals for the whole business population.
