In 2024, there were 2,746 wholesalers of pharmaceutical goods in the United Kingdom. The number of enterprises engaged in the wholesale of pharmaceutical goods has increased significantly in the country since 2008. 

Rise in wholesalers not isolated

Alongside this rise in the number of enterprises, the turnover in the wholesale sector has grown significantly in the same period. The turnover from the wholesale of pharmaceutical goods has increased from around 30 billion British pounds to over 65 billion pounds in the 14 years between 2008 and 2022. Additionally, consumer spending on pharmaceutical products reached some eight billion British pounds in 2022. 

What products are being consumed in the UK?

Pain relief was the over-the-counter category that received the highest sales value in Great Britain in 2023, with some 750 million British pounds. This was followed by cough and cold remedies, which had a sales value of approximately 580 million British pounds. In terms of prescription drugs, atorvastatin was the most dispensed drug in England in 2022, which treats those with high cholesterol.
