To be included in the study, an article had to be in the source's EthicsTrak database (which contains assessments of 1252 newspaper articles evaluated over a seven-year period), it had to be published between October 1, 2012 and September 30, 2013 in the top five U.S. daily newspapers (as measured by circulation) - USA Today, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Los Angeles Times and Washington Post. It had to focus on an ethical or legal issue facing the pharmaceutical industry and appear either as a front-page story or on the editorial page.
