Global Tobacco Production

Between 2013 and 2018 there was a decline in the production volume of tobacco worldwide. In 2018 about 6.1 million metric tons of tobacco was produced, down from *** million metric tons in 2013. Most of the world’s tobacco is grown in China, amounting to *** million metric tons in 2018. The United States was also a major producer of tobacco in that year, with a production volume of *** thousand metric tons.

Cigarette Consumption in the U.S.

2016 was the first year since the year 2000 in which the share of cigarette smokers in the United States increased compared to the previous year. About 15.5 percent of American adults smoked in 2016, up from 15.1 percent in 2015. However, in 2017 the share of smokers among the overall population dipped again to **** percent. In the United States, a higher proportion of men than women smoke cigarettes, a trend which has stayed consistent since at least the 1990s.
