Data are collected and calculated for report years. A report year is each transit agency's fiscal year that ends during a calendar year.
Data are reported for "modes of service". A mode of service is not always identical with a vehicle type of the same name. For example, fixed-route bus service may in specific circumstances be provided by larger van type vehicles and variable origin and destination paratransit service may in specific circumstances be provided by bus vehicles.
