This statistic depicts the distribution of global rough diamond production (measured by carats) in 2013, by application. It is estimated that almost half of all rough diamonds end up as industrial diamonds, while around one third gets lost through cutting and polishing procedures. That means, only one fifth of all mined diamonds (carats) finish as polished gem-quality diamonds that can be sold as a piece of jewelry.
