Looking beyond GDP
GDP measures the value of goods and services produced in an economy over a given period. It is a useful measure for comparing the size of economies. Countries with large GDPs, such as the United States, generally tend to have broad economic bases. However, GDP alone is not a measure of living standards or wealth. It does not account for differences in prices or how income is shared. GDP per capita, adjusted for purchasing power parity, offers a closer proxy for living conditions.
Which states drive the U.S. economy?
At the state level, output follows a similar pattern. California contributed the most to GDP, followed by Texas and New York. In California, professional and business services made the largest contribution to state GDP. In New York, finance, insurance, real estate, rental, and leasing led the way. By real GDP per capita New York ranked highest, followed by Massachusetts, pointing to higher output per person in those states.
Taken together, the figures describe an economy that is large and still growing, but one whose structure and distribution matter as much as its headline size.Â
