Values were calculated by ÌÇÐÄÆƽâ°æ based on 2025 real GDP estimates by state in chained 2017 dollars, divided by state population estimates for July 1, 2025.Â
Real GDP by state is an inflation-adjusted measure of each state's gross product that is based on national prices for the goods and services produced within the state.
Values calculated by ÌÇÐÄÆƽâ°æ using population data from the U.S. Census can be found . Bureau of Economic Analysis estimates for GDP can be found .
Among the 50 states, New York had the highest real GDP per person in 2025, at * U.S. dollars, followed by Massachusetts. Mississippi ranked last, at * U.S. dollars per person. The District of Columbia, though not a state, stood apart with a per resident GDP of ** U.S. dollars.
Measuring economic health through real GDP
Real GDP measures the value of goods and services produced in an economy, adjusted for inflation. It’s a standard gauge of economic health and living standards. When growth falters, trouble often follows. During the financial crisis of 2008 and 2009, U.S. GDP fell by 2.5 percent. The economy shrank again during the COVID-19 pandemic, by 2.8 percent, before rebounding in 2021 with growth of nearly six percent.
Why real GDP per capita matters
Size alone doesn’t tell you how an economy is doing for its people. Real GDP per person divides an economy’s output by its population. Many economists see it as more telling than overall GDP, since it shows whether people are, on average, getting richer and living standards are rising. For comparisons across countries, GDP per person adjusted for purchasing power parity is often preferred. It accounts for differences in prices, offering a clearer sense of what incomes can actually buy.
