This statistic shows the proportion of department store sales in the total annual retail sales In December from 2008 to 2010. Throughout the years, the department store sales amounted to a constant 14 percent of all sales during Christmas season in the U.S. Interestingly enough, Americans seemed to prefer buying jewelry as Christmas presents for their loved ones, since the jewelry store sales figures amounted to a significantly higher share, with 18 percent in 2008, 21 percent in 2009 and 20 percent in 2010.
