Households in the United States consisted of an average of *** people in 2025. This was down from **** at the beginning of the decade. The number of people per household has decreased over the past decades. 

What is a household?

The U.S. Census Bureau defines a household to include all the persons who occupy a residence. These may be a family, a single person living alone, or any form and grouped living of people regardless of familial relaitionships.

Changing household demographics

Since 1960, the number of households has more than doubled in the U.S. The distribution of U.S. household types has also changed over the years. About **** were two-person households, and the percentage of single-person households has been on the rise. In concordance, the percentage of family households with children has declined significantly.
