Between 2025 and 2026, the purchasing power of formal minimum-wage earners in Colombia increased by **** percent, more than ever before in the country’s recent history. This growth is a direct consequence of President Petro’s controversial decision to raise the minimum wage by nearly 24 percent at the end of 2025.
The increase, well above inflation and without a significant rise in productivity, was heavily criticized by economists, who warned that the spike in payroll costs would ultimately drive up inflation, fuel unemployment, and push more workers into the informal economy.
