This chart illustrates the area of forest burned in the European Union by country, averaged per year over the period between 2006 and 2023 as well as in 2024, in hectares. Forest fires have particularly affected Portugal during this period. The countries around the Mediterranean are also especially exposed to forest fires. Between 50,000 and 80,000 hectares of forest burn each year in Spain, Italy, and Greece. France, for its part, has lost about 13,000 hectares of forest annually. The highest number of forest fires was recorded in 2019 and 2022.

The year-on-year increase in the area burned by forest fires is a consequence of climate change.
