Since 2016, Japan has maintained an exceptionally accommodative monetary policy, with the policy interest rate remaining at or below zero for most of the period. A major shift occurred in March 2024, when the Bank of Japan ended its negative interest rate policy. The policy rate was subsequently raised to **** percent in December 2025, after remaining at *** the whole year. Over the same period, inflation dynamics changed markedly. After decades of subdued price growth, consumer inflation rose sharply from 2022 onward, reaching *** percent in 2023 before easing to *** percent in 2024. In April 2026, Japan’s inflation rate stood at *** percent.
