In 2023, the population growth rate in Mexico was **** percent. Although this value represents a slight increase compared to the previous two years, it marks the seventh consecutive year in which the annual growth remains below * percent. This indicator, along with the aging index, confirms that the country's demographic transition is transforming its population pyramid, moving towards an inverted bell-shaped structure.
The decline in the birth rate
The fertility rate reached its lowest level in history in 2022, with an average of *** children per woman. Naturally, the reduction in the number of registered births has been one of the main causes of the lower population growth, and among the factors explaining this trend are the increase in the use of contraceptives and the postponement of motherhood.
Migration balance
In addition to birth rates, the persistent negative net migration rate is one of the greatest concerns of experts in Mexican demography in 2023. This migratory imbalance, which shows greater emigration of the economically active population compared to the influx of immigrants, has direct consequences on the tax burdens that support the country's dependent population.
