In 2020, there were over ** thousand passers of the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK). TOPIK was first introduced and conducted in 1997. Since then, the scale of the test has continued to grow both in size and frequency, with *** tests conducted worldwide in 2019. As Korean pop culture gained more popularity over the years (Hallyu, or the Korean wave), the amount of people studying Korean and taking the TOPIK test also grew in number. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the second test scheduled in 2020 was canceled.
