After all the media and advertising hype, Barbie finally arrived in theaters worldwide during the third week of July 2023. The film based on the famous Mattel doll, directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, broke all records at the domestic box office, grossing around 162 million U.S. dollars in the United States and Canada during its opening weekend. This success was repeated in other parts of the globe such as the United Kingdom and Mexico, where it earned 22.9 and 22.3 million U.S. dollars respectively thanks to ticket sales in its first days in theaters. However, there were two countries where the figures were not as promising. On one hand, China grossed around eight million, which, although it surpasses the box office of other nations like Germany or Argentina, is undoubtedly a poor figure considering its vast population compared to those territories. On the other hand, in South Korea it was an even greater failure, having earned barely 1.2 million U.S. dollars.
