As of July 2026, "The King's Warden" is the highest grossing domestic movie in South Korea, with a box office revenue of around * billion South Korean won. It beat out "Extreme Job," which held the title for several years. "Extreme Job" overtook "Avatar," the highest-grossing foreign movie in the country.

"Extreme Job" follows a group of young narcotics detectives that are supposed to carry out undercover surveillance of an international drug gang. They buy a chicken restaurant to use it for their undercover operation, but unexpectedly gain popularity for their food. The comedy must have hit the nerve of time, as it became the most watched movie in South Korean cinemas in 2019 and second-most watched movie in South Korean history.

Movie exports

In 2024, roughly ***South Korean movies were exported and the export value of completed movies stood at about **** million U.S. dollars. The leading destination countries for South Korean movies are typically Asian countries, like Japan and Taiwan, but also includes Western countries, especially the United States. South Korean movies were focus of attention in early 2020, when "Parasite" by South Korean director Bong Joon-ho won several Oscars, including Best Picture.
