The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the mpox (monkeypox) outbreak a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) on August 14. The outbreak began in the Democratic Republic of the Congo with the spread of an endemic strain known as clade Ib, but a new variant, clade Ib, appears to spread more easily through routine close contact, including sexual contact. The clade Ib has already reached neighboring countries such as Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda.
It is worth noting that the mpox virus has caused concern among health authorities before. During 2022 and 2023, the WHO issued the first alerts. Additionally, considering the retrospective total since 2022, the United States is the most affected country, with more than * cases and a total of ** deaths.
