Fruit Production

Fruit cultivation represents an important part of agricultural production. According to the quantities produced, the most popular fresh fruits in the world are, in order, banana, apple, and grape. Bananas and apples grow on trees, and grapes grow on vines.

For cultivation, tropical banana plants require a warm and humid climate and rich soils, dark and fertile earth. Among the types of bananas most widely grown worldwide are the Cavendish, Lady Fingers, and Plantains varieties. The latter is also known as the cooking banana. It is characterized by a drier texture and usually contains more starch. In many tropical countries, Plantain bananas are a staple food.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), countries with the highest production include China, the United States, and Turkey. Among the most popular apple varieties in the United States are Gala, Red Delicious, and Granny Smith.

Fruits and vegetables are considered essential foods in a healthy and balanced diet. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, created and published every five years by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), recommend increased consumption of fruits and vegetables.
