According to estimates of gross domestic product (GDP) growth in the largest economies of Latin America, the outbreak of the new type of coronavirus initiated a period of economic recession in most of the region during 2020. For example, it is estimated that Mexico's GDP contracted by almost 8 percent in 2020, but resumed the growth path in 2021, with an increase of 4.72 percent in GDP, according to estimates from April of that year.

Argentina is estimated to have experienced a GDP decrease of nearly 10 percent in 2020. The recovery has been remarkable in 2021, a year in which the Argentine economy grew by 10.4 percent. Colombia, for its part, went from an economic contraction of 7.25 percent in 2020 to growth of 11.02 percent in 2021.
