The indicator is calculated as the ratio between greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions related to energy and the gross domestic energy consumption. It expresses how many tons of CO2 equivalent GHG related to energy are emitted in a given economy per unit of energy consumed. The data on energy emissions are obtained from the GHG emissions reported to the UNFCCC.
This statistic presents the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions derived from energy consumption (in CO2 equivalents) in Spain from 2005 to 2023, measured as an index referencing the year 1990. Thus, the emissions index in the country was 94.2 in 2023, which means a decrease of nearly 6 percent compared to the base year.
