As a result of the confinement measures implemented by the Mexican government following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mexican children and young people enrolled in educational institutions were forced to continue their studies from home. However, it is estimated that more than 2.83 million students dropped out of school between April and August 2020.

School dropout in basic education

Despite the distance education tools available for studying from home, it is estimated that around 2.53 million children and adolescents from preschool to high school dropped out of school. This represents 10 percent of the total students enrolled in preschool, primary, secondary, and high school institutions. One of the main reasons why students decide not to continue their studies is related to the limited effectiveness of distance classes.

How many higher education students dropped out?

In the case of higher education, which includes universities and other technical and professional education institutions, it is estimated that at least 305,000 students stopped attending classes. This accounts for 8 percent of the student body. According to a survey conducted between April and May 2020, nearly two-thirds of the university students surveyed in Mexico were enrolled in programs with in-person modality.
