Intramural spending occurs in the research centers of the pharmaceutical companies themselves. Extramural spending is allocated to research contracts with hospitals, universities, and public centers.

According to the results of the R&D activities survey conducted annually by Farmaindustria, Madrid was the autonomous community where the Spanish pharmaceutical industry allocated the highest percentage of intramural R&D investment.
