The pressure from patients infected with COVID-19 on the capacity of hospital facilities has influenced the health measures adopted by the French government throughout the epidemic. During the first wave of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in spring 2020, the proportion of patients admitted to intensive care due to COVID surged in a few days, rising from 15 percent on March 19, 2020, to nearly 60 percent a week later. In April of the same year, French hospitals were overwhelmed with days where there were more patients (only for COVID-19) than the total number of intensive care beds available across France. The vaccination campaign helped relieve medical facilities in France in 2021. However, the emergence of the Omicron variant in France in November 2021 caused a sharp increase in COVID-19 cases, but the number of patients admitted to critical care was lower than in 2020. Since February 2022, the rate has decreased significantly. By the end of May 2022, COVID patients occupied less than 20 percent of intensive care beds. It is important to note that this rate also varies according to the number of bed closures or openings during this period.
