This statistic details the electric energy consumption for train traction in France between 2009 and 2023, in thousands of gigawatt-hours. In 2022, the electric energy consumption for train traction in France rose to more than 10,300 gigawatt-hours. In 2009, this consumption was 7,800 gigawatt-hours. The lower energy consumption in 2020 and 2021 compared to 2019 and 2022 is partly explained by a reduction in the number of trips due to the health crisis.
