The source adds the following information: "Any accident involving at least one moving railway vehicle and causing death or serious injury to at least one person or significant damage to rolling stock, tracks, or other facilities, or major traffic disruptions. Accidents occurring in workshops, warehouses, and depots are not taken into account." * Types of accidents:
- Collision (excluding level crossings): head-on or rear-end collision between two trains or (lateral) collision between a train and a part of another train outside the loading gauge, or a train striking, during shunting movements, fixed objects or objects temporarily present on or near the railway track.
- Derailments: all cases where at least one wheel of a train leaves the rails.
- Accidents at level crossings: any accident occurring at a level crossing involving at least one railway vehicle and one or more road vehicle(s), other road users such as pedestrians, or other objects temporarily present on or near the tracks.
- Accidents involving persons: any accident involving one or more persons suffering a collision with a railway vehicle, a part of the vehicle, or an object detached from the vehicle. This includes persons who fall from railway vehicles as well as persons who fall or are struck by unsecured objects during their journey on board.
- Fires: fires and explosions occurring in railway vehicles (or their cargo) during the journey between the departure and destination stations, including during intermediate stops and train formation operations.
