On average in the euro area, social contributions represent the largest mandatory levy. Next come consumption taxes, followed by income taxes on residents. Differences can be observed between France and Germany: in Germany, social contributions and corporate profit taxes are higher than in France. Conversely, in France, consumption taxes as well as production taxes were higher than in Germany in 2021.
