In the 1950s , French military spending was much higher compared to the national GDP than it is currently. In 1953, the share of French military expenditures reached a peak, likely related to the Indochina War. Despite the Algerian War ending in 1962, the share of military spending in the GDP began to decline as early as 1956. Since the early 2000s , the rate has fluctuated around 2 percent of the French GDP.
