Between January 2023 and March 2025, a total of ** hospitals have been converted to rural emergency hospitals (REH) in the United States. REH is a new hospital designation that became effective in January 2023 to keep emergency and outpatient hospital services accessible in rural areas, especially those that can't support a full-service hospital. Rural emergency hospitals are not allowed to have inpatient beds.
