U.S. rural hospitals - Statistics & Facts
Over the last two decades, there has been a significant number of rural hospital closures in the United States. Rural hospitals, which are hospitals in non-metropolitan areas, account for 35 percent of all community hospitals in the United States. While urban hospitals are also on the decline, their rural counterparts are disproportionately affected. Reduced healthcare access will most likely further exacerbate the inequalities in health outcomes of rural versus urban communities.
