In India, scheduled caste and scheduled tribe (SC/ST) and OBCs are officially recognized by the constitution as groups of disadvantaged indigenous people. They are the primary beneficiaries of reservation policies under the constitution. The colloquial terms for SCs and STs are Dalits and Adivasis respectively.

In a survey conducted from August 2023 to July 2024, it was found that the average monthly per capita consumption (MPCE) in urban areas of India for the 'Other Backward Classes' (OBCs) was  Indian rupees. In contrast, the Scheduled Caste (SC) had an MPCE of rupees during that period.
