In January 2025, the City of Edinburgh Council approved a five percent tourist tax on accommodation for overnight stays in the Scottish capital. As of that month, the tax was set to come into force in July 2026. To ensure the tax would only apply to short-term rented accommodation, the Council capped the timescale in which the tax is levied at to be five consecutive nights.
