At the end of May 2024, the share of contractors working in the video game industry in the United Kingdom (UK) stood at 12.7 percent, almost tripling from the year before. This significant increase in freelancers contributing to the UK gaming industry is related to various factors. The most significant of these factors is studios and publishers downsizing and restructuring their workforce and the laid off workers remaining freelance in the industry. In the 12 months until March 2024, 248 gaming companies in the UK closed down or exited the industry.
