The total direct tax payments made by the top percentile households in Israel reached 37.2 billion Israeli shekels in 2021, some 9.8 billion U.S. dollars. This accounted for almost 10 percent of the overall tax revenue that year. Over the observed period, tax payments by the wealthiest one percent saw a steady increase, peaking in 2017, when their share reached 12.1 percent of the total tax collection. This spike can be attributed to a government decision to implement a one-time tax incentive to release "trapped" capital gains taxes.
