Morocco's electric vehicle industry is experiencing a surge of investment from Chinese companies, with approximately *** billion U.S. dollars committed as of 2024. The largest investment comes from Gotion High-Tech Co., Ltd., which has pledged *** billion U.S. dollars. The investment agreement with the Moroccan government was signed on June 6, 2024, with the aim to build a factory in the city of Kenitra for EV battery production and energy storage systems.

Infrastructure and market growth

To support the expanding EV sector, Morocco has developed a substantial charging infrastructure, with about AC stations and *** DC stations as of 2024. This investment in charging facilities aligns with the increasing sales of electrified vehicles. In fact, as of 2023, Morocco recorded hybrid car sales, with projections reaching by the end of 2024. Electric vehicle sales, while lower, are also on the rise, with *** units sold in 2023 and expectations of nearly doubling to *** by the following year. 

Competitive landscape

Despite the significant Chinese investments, the Moroccan EV market remains diverse. As of 2023, Dacia held the largest market share at ** percent, followed by Citroën at ** percent. Chinese manufacturer BYD, which has introduced a range of models to cater to various consumer needs, held an percent market share. However, traditional fuel vehicles still dominate the overall automotive market, with diesel-powered cars accounting for ** percent of sales in 2023, compared to the *** percent share held by electrified vehicles. This indicates significant room for growth in the EV sector as infrastructure and consumer adoption continue to improve.
