Heavy commercial vehicles are an ever present sight on highways across the globe and in recent years, manufactuers have embarked on a quest to ever improve the technology and reduce the emissions of their vehicles. With the size of Sweden's battery powered and hybrid heavy commercial vehicle fleet reaching *** vehicles in 2023, Sweden is playing a key role in shaping the future of the commercial vehicles market.

The main players on Sweden's roads

In 2023, the Swedish manufactuer Volvo had the highest number of new registrations in Sweden, totalling *** electric powered heavy commercial vehicles. Another Swedish manufactuer Scania AB, registered the second highest number of electric-powered light commercial vehicles, totalling over vehicles.

Volvo itself dominated the market share in electric vehicles, totalling nearly ** percent of the countries market share. However, Volvo also relied on it's sale of hybrid vehicles to reach it's market share, meaning that Tesla was the most popular brand that dealt exclusivlely in batter-powered vehicles.

Is this the future for commercial vehicles?

As numerous manufactures and governments strive to reach their net zero targets, the the global CO₂ emissions of commercial vehicles are due to substantially decrease, dropping to under *** MtCO₂ by 2050. However, The number of hydrogen fuel stations has also increased  over time, with Sweden currently operating **** hydrogen fueling stations across the country. As of yet, it is clear that although CO₂ emissions of vehicles are set to decrease, it is too early to tell whether battery-powered commercial vehicles will lead the charge to net zero, or whether an alternative fuel source will be the ultimate solution.
