The MLIT refers with the term "universal design taxi" to taxis that are wheelchair accessible and have transfer aids, such as rotating seats and the like. Such vehicles are designed to be easily usable by anybody.

As of March 31, 2024, around **** percent of taxis operating in Japan were universal design taxis with improved accessibility. The government announced its aim to have around ** thousand taxis with improved accessibility by the end of fiscal 2025.
