The MLIT refers with the term "welfare taxi" to taxis of the following kind: stretcher accessible vehicles, wheelchair accessible vehicles, stretcher/wheelchair accessible vehicles, as well as taxis with transfer aids, such as rotating seats and the like. A permit for the transportation of people with disabilities is necessary.

As of March 31, 2024, there were around thousand welfare taxis with improved accessibility available in Japan, an increase from roughly thousand in the previous year. The government announced its aim to have around ** thousand taxis with improved accessibility by the end of fiscal 2025.
