In 2024, bagasse was the leading bioenergy source in Latin America and the Caribbean, with a capacity of 17 gigawatts. This fibrous byproduct of crushed sugarcane stalks is extensively used in the region for electricity generation, bioethanol production, and the creation of biomass pellets and briquettes. In comparison, biogas had a bioenergy capacity of 854 megawatts, renewable municipal waste 22 megawatts, and liquid biofuels 17 megawatts.
