In station-based bike-sharing schemes, hired bikes have to be returned to the station from which they were picked up or dropped off at another designated hire station.
In free-floating bike-sharing schemes, bicycles do not need to be returned to the same location where they were picked up but can be dropped off anywhere within a usually pre-determined geographic area.Â
