For each transportation mode, a different number of agencies reported on it. The figures are calculated in the same manner with the number of agencies offering mechanical fareboxes on their transport mode is divided by the total number of agencies reporting on that mode. The same is done separately for electronic farebox availability.

North America: public transport agencies using electronic/mechanical farebox, by mode
As of 2022, the general trend is the greater availability of electronic fareboxes than mechanical ones on public transportation vehicles. This is exemplified in the figures regarding bus and commuter bus, with **** and **** percent of transit agencies, respectively offering electronic fareboxes, and **** and **** percent, respectively, for mechanical fareboxes. Some modes of transport like trolleybus and streetcar railway offer no mechanical fareboxes. And some, like commuter rail and cable car, use other methods like electronic turnstiles or proof of payment that is checked on vehicle by a transit employee.
